So it seems darn near everyone in the city is sick so it seems like a good time to share my goto ways to ward off the bug.
1. Oregano oil. I keep a bottle at my desk and if there are colds going around, a few drops go under my toungue. Its spicy. I smell like a pizza. But, apparently, bugs don’t like pizza.
2. Vitamin C. Pack it to ya. At least 1000 mg per day. If you don’t want it in supplement form, try rosehip or hibiscus tea. You’ll pee a weird neon green but you’ll feel better.
3. Salt bath. Take a hot bath with sea, epsom or himalayan salts. Pull that bug right outta ya. While you’re in there throw in some tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil, close the shower door and get a good steam inhalation at the same time.
4. Steam inhalation. If you can’t get yourself to the tub, boil a kettle full of water. Pour it into a bowl or the sink with some tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil. Throw a towel over your head and breathe. You’ll be sweating like a marathon runner which is also good!
5. Apple Cider Vinegar Gargle. This one tastes disgusting but its great for knocking out a cough or achy throat. Take some apple cider vinegar and pour it about half and half with some warm water into a glass. Now add as much cayenne pepper as you think you can stand. Gargle. Some people will say to drink it but you’ll barf. So gargle. As often as you like. Bugs don’t like it any more than you do.
6. Garlic and Ginger. Eat them. Or drink the ginger as tea.
7. Sleep. Now is not the time for all nighters. Step away from the computer. Go. To. Bed.
8. Neti pot. If your sinuses are already starting to clog up, try a neti pot. Sea salt. Warm water. Pour it into your nose. Yeah I said it. Pour it into your nose. You’ll thank me later.
9. Cold Blaster tea. This is my go to tea because this is what I made it for. Here are some other herb options for you in the tea department. You may already have some of these around the house! Ginger, hibiscus, rosehip, peppermint, echinacea, lemon, basil, cloves, licorice, elderberry, goldenseal, mullein, marshmallow, aniseed. Find them and steep them.
10. Zinc. Zinc helps shorten the life of a cold once you’ve got it. My friend, Jill R., is awesome at always having zinc lozenges on hand for me to steal. So if you see Jill, ask her for some zinc lozenges.
